Lumo Upper Secondary School has been operating in the Lumo Center in Korso since August 2003 when the building was completed and the upper secondary schools of Koivykylä and Korso were joined. The Lumo Center is located near the Korso railway station and bus depot, which offer good transportation connections. The Lumo Center contains modern and versatile facilities for students as well as area residents.
The Lumo Center houses not only the upper secondary school, but also an internet café, a restaurant, a public services center, and a library. In addition, a visual art school, a college of music, and an adult education centre offer courses taught in the Lumo Center.
The library, the extensive facilities for music, art, and physical exercise, as well as the state-of-the-art classrooms create a versatile and effective learning environment.
Environmental development and new technology
Sustainable development and preservation of the environment are important issues nowadays. The science courses and facilities at Lumo offer opportunities to not only discuss these issues, but to learn hands-on in the natural science laboratories, the solar energy laboratory, and the weather measurement station.
For those interested in going on to study the environment at university, Lumo offers an extensive array of mathematics and natural science courses. In addition to traditional courses (biology, physics, chemistry, geology, mathematics and information technology) you can also study biology in English, astronomy, space studies, and environmental science among others. Laboratory courses are available in biology, chemistry and physics.
Are you an artist?
Lumo provides excellent opportunities for those interested in the arts. The media laboratory, the auditorium, the dance studio, two well-equipped visual arts classrooms, the music room, the recording studio and band practice rooms enable students to learn a new art form as a hobby or to develop the skills needed for higher education and the professional world.
In visual arts you can study drawing, painting, photography, video recording, video editing, digital image processing, ceramics, multimedia design, advertising, and art history. You can also train for art schools? entrance examinations ? those who wish to become visual arts teachers after studying at Lumo may return later for their teacher training experience.
Drama courses have been offered since 1993 in cooperation with the local drama school. The drama courses include basic dramatic arts, musical theatre, script-writing, stage design, and sound and lighting design.
Drama, dance and music groups are an essential part of arts education and take part in various performances at school and in the community. The auditorium has state-of-the-art sound technology.
Many languages and an international network
In Lumo upper secondary school there is a versatile selection of foreign languages. English, Swedish, French, and German are taught as primary foreign languages. Secondary foreign languages offered include English, Spanish, Swedish, French, German, Russian and Latin. In addition, Italian and Japanese are offered occasionally. In Swedish and English, elective conversation and culture courses are also offered.
Physical exercise opportunities
The gymnasium, weight room, dance studio and wrestling hall provide excellent opportunities for physical exercise. In addition to traditional physical education courses, Lumo offers, among others, basketball, dance, and stress management courses for senior year students. Our upper secondary school has strong traditions of cooperation with local sports clubs.
From chess clubs to dating skills
Other elective courses include antique culture and languages, the history and culture of Egypt, EU courses, chess course, graphic calculation, CD-ROM mathematics, practical electronics, social psychology, learning to learn, and a dating and sex course. Studies include visits for example to the court of law, companies, the zoo, the science centre and museums.
High quality information technology
In Lumo the information technology class, media laboratory and numerous workstations offer versatile possibilities to those interested in technology. Among other things digital image processing programs are available and there is a chance to make electronic music. You can learn about making homepages and programming and you can take a separate commercial computer certification exam.
Examinations and diplomas
In our upper secondary school you can take nationwide diploma exams in skills and arts subjects (visual arts, drama and theatre, music, physical exercise and crafts). It is possible to include some vocational subjects in your studies or even earn a double degree through a vocational school.
Excellent library and information services
Besides the Lumo library there is also an Information centre, especially to support studying, to guide students to the sources of information you need, and to teach you to search for information independently. Through the Information centre and the library you have access to the large amount of material of all metropolitan area libraries, the print and the electronic database, the new library information system, and of course the aid of professional librarians.
University and vocational institute studies in upper secondary school
In cooperation with the universities of Helsinki and Jyväskylä you can take university studies even during upper secondary school. The Helsinki vocational institute offers courses, for example, in information technology.
The Student union is the voice of the students
The student union takes part in planning the upper secondary schools activities. They run the students kiosk, facilitate school book swapping and organize different kinds of events and trips like the first year student welcoming party, extremely popular music events, downhill skiing trips and basketball matches. According to the student satisfaction polls the students are happy with the schools atmosphere and feel that they are listened to.
