The School Social Worker
A School social worker "koulukuraattori" is part of the international school's social and welfare services. The school social worker's task is to support the child or youngster in her/his psychosocial growth and development, together with the parents and the other school staff.

The school social worker's work consists of many things, such as parental meetings and discussions, organizing support structures for the pupil and the family, giving consultation services for the pupil and the family and the partners in cooperation, providing special education and establishing statements and agreements.

The School welfare officer is a member of the school's support service group, sharing her knowledge to everyone in this multiprofessional group. You can meet the school's social worker at school, home or in another suitable place. The school social worker takes part of school happenings such as parents' evenings, theme days, school camps and trips. The school social worker can work with group of pupils or classes and organize parental gatherings and groups.

You can contact the school social worker when having a concern dealing with the welfare of a child or a youngster. The cause of a concern can arise from many things, such as:

  • when the child/youngster is neglected by her/his parents
  • when the child/youngster is showing abnormal symptoms of tiredness, strong fears, depression, restlessness or has problems in behaviour
  • when the child's/youngster's physical needs are not satisfied, for example food, decent clothes, sleeping etc.
  • when the child/youngster has been abused physically or mentally
  • when the child/youngster uses alcohol or drugs
  • when the parents use alcohol or drugs
  • when the child/youngster or parents
  • when the child/youngster has committed a crime
  • when the child's/youngster's parents are not available or present at home
  • any other concern

At the International School of Vantaa, one of the focus areas of the school social worker's work is to support the 6th graders with their transition to the 7th grade. That is why the social worker will send out a questionnaire to the pupils concerning their transition to the 7th grade, family, hobbies and future. After the questioning, the social worker will meet the pupils individually or in pairs.

The School welfare officer Merja Orava is present at school every Tuesday and every second Thursday. According to an agreement, the appointments can be held on other time too.

You can call 0400478904 or send e-mail at merja.orava@vantaa.fi

This is the result of our School Song project we have been doing in music this
fall. Students from grades 3 to 6 made lyrics of their own, and we performed it
in our UN Assembly on the 24th of October.

3rd
We are 3rd graders, we do like this school,
teachers are nice, lessons too.
School books are nice, tidy, like the school food
we can make friends, which is cool!

4A
Students are great and they follow the rules
they are the best of all schools.
PE is cool and the music is fun
And we have grades nine to one.
We always study for tests really long,
hardly get anything wrong.
Teachers are great and they make the school rule
they'll help you - all this is true!

4B
Looking from east or west our school seems best
Tests, aim for best, hardly rest.
Never seen school like this, so wonderful
this building is beautiful.
Pleasure of working with all our friends -
hard work rewarded tens.
We have good rules, we use them as our tools
all of our teachers, they rule!

5th
School mascot welcomes to school every day
what we'll discover today!
All we need here are the pencils and books,
show thanks to all our cooks.
Step in the school yard, say "hi" to your friends
bring your stuff - no need to lend
We do have children from one to sixteen
we like to cheer for sport teams.

5/6
Everyone waiting outside in the yard
exited to go to our school
?Hard work we do, and we eat healthy food
that's what we ISV's do!
Run along this way we'll get rid of fear
helping is what we do here.
Whole world is smiling on us in its way
it gives us joy every day.

6th
Every year new teachers, always so kind
Their teaching stays in our mind.
Even though some are strict, learning is fun
Recesses give the day's Sun.
Friends are so nice to play on our break
they are the ones keeping wake.
Education is the best we can have
we're working hard, then we laugh.
